Tutorial written April 18, 2007.

The Mandevilla is a tropical vine that has large, beautiful, showy blooms. As I said, the
vine is a tropical vine so it doesn't do well in cold climates. I'm able to grow it here in
MS. by bringing it inside for the winter.

This tutorial is written using PSP 10.01 but can be done in other version with a little
modification of tool locations.

This is a vector and painting tutorial. It is not a tutorial intended for new users, a working
knowledge of the tools in PSP will be needed to complete this tutorial.

Some screenshots are reduced in size and some have been zoomed in on to show detail.

1. Open a 600X600 transparent canvas. Set your background to #f65a9d
Preset Shape set to Ellipse, create as a vector and show nodes should be checked.

This is the vector settings we will be using for the tutorial.

2. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Petal 1. Draw out a small oval on the left
of your canvas. For those that like the Radius...

3. Right click on the ellipse and select, Convert to Path. Click on the Pen Tool.

4.Shape your first petal something like this....

5. Convert to Raster. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Petal 2.

6. Draw out a second petal just below the first one...

7. Right click, Convert to path. Click on the Pen Tool.

8.Add new nodes where needed, changing to Cusp and shape something like this...

9. Convert to Raster. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Petal 3.

10. Draw an oval to be your 3rd petal...

11. Right click, Convert to path. Click on the Pen Tool.

12. Add nodes and change the type to Cusp where needed to shape something
like this....

13. Right click, Apply. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Petal 4.

14. Draw out another oval for your 4th petal....

15. Right click, Convert to path. Click on the Pen Tool.

16. Add nodes, change to Cusp and shape like so...

17. Convert to Raster. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Petal 5.

18. Draw out a 5th oval to be your last petal...

19. Right click, Convert to path. Click on the Pen Tool.

20. Add nodes changing to Cusp and shape like so...

21. Set your background color to #e9c45f, foreground should be off.

22. Preset Shapes, same as we've been using. Add a new Vector Layer naming it
Center.
Draw out a small oval in the center of your petals...

Convert to Raster.

Those are the vector shapes of a fully bloomed Mandevilla.

Now on to making the leaf....

23. Make your Center Layer your active layer, should be your top layer.
Add a New Vector Layer naming it Leaf.

24. Set your background color to #576528 and your foreground color to #95a25f.

25. Preset Shapes to the setting we've been using except, set the Width to 2.

26. Draw out a large oval in the center of your flower. You don't have to be exact
on this because you can rotate it later....

27. Right click, Convert to Path. Click on the Pen Tool.

28. By adding 4 nodes, shape your leaf something like this....

29. Convert to Raster.

Shading your Mandevilla and leaf.

30. Close the visibility on the Leaf layer for a bit.

31. Make Petal 1 your active layer. Set your background color to #ef91cb and
your foreground color to #c84575.

32. Select and Float Petal 1. Set your Airbrush to these settings.....

33. Spray some of the dark color on your petal something like this...

34. Add some of the light color...

35. Use the Smudge Tool with these settings to blend your colors...

36. Lower the size on your Airbrush to 9 and spray more dark and light areas.
Use the Smudge Tool to blend them....

37. Deselect Petal 1. Select and Float Petal 2.

38. Do the same steps as you did for Petal 1 to shade and blend Petals 2, 3, 4, & 5....

39. Make your Center your active layer. Do not select it.

40. Using the darkest color we used for the petals, spray the outside edges of your
center.
Use the Smudge Tool to blend the center into the petals....

41. Set your foreground color to the dark green of the leaf #576528

42. Use the Airbrush settings and size 9 to spray a center in the yellow...

43. Use the Smudge Tool to lightly blend the green.
NOTE...... you may have to use the Eraser and or the Smudge Tool to remove some of
the yellow.

44. Go to Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow and apply these settings...
Shadow Color #581a1e

46. Apply the Drop Shadow 3 more times, you should ended up with something like this...

47. Make visible your Leaf Layer.

48. Set your foreground color to #95a25f background should be off.

49. Activate your Pen Tool with these settings...

50. Starting at the bottom V in your leaf, click once, go to the tip of the leaf and click again to
draw your line. Zoom in so you can see the tip. Make sure the line is on the very tip center of the
point in the leaf. Right click, change Node type to Symmetrical.

51. Pull down and over to the left on the node handle something like this...

52. Convert the Line to Raster.

53. Close all layers except the two leaf layers, merge the two layers visible,
rename to Leaf.

54. Select and Float the Leaf, contract the selections by 2.
Set your foreground color to #3c4c12 and your background to #95a25f

55. Airbrush set to these settings...

56. Start out by spraying lines down your leaf in the dark color ....

57. Use the light color and these Airbrush settings to shade lighter areas on the leaf...

58. Use the Smudge Tool settings to blend the colors....

59. Float the Selection. Apply a cutout with these settings...

Deselect.

60. You should have something like this.......

61. Make visible all the flower layers. Hide the Leaf layer and the bottom Raster1 layer,
merge the flower layers Visible. Open All layers.

62. Drag the Leaf layer so that it is below your flower layer. You can Duplicate the leaf,
use the Pick Tool to rotate the leaves anyway you'd like.

That's it, you have a Mandevilla. You can leave it like this or you can make a vine to place
several flowers and leaves on....

Until next time... God Bless!
Connie
